History
Viridis listed in 2022 as a gold and kaolin explorer, then pivoted to Brazilian rare earths at Colossus, growing it to a 493Mt resource by January 2025.
2022: Listing and first drilling
Viridis Mining and Minerals was admitted to the ASX on 20 January 2022, with shares quoted from 24 January. Its IPO raised $5,000,000 by issuing 25 million shares at $0.20. At listing it also issued 2,125,000 shares to the vendors of AHD and paid $25,000 to Silver Range Resources for an option over up to 100% of the South Kitikmeot gold project, leaving 35,397,889 shares on issue.
In May 2022 Executive Director Hugh Callaghan resigned and Chair Agha Shahzad Pervez became Executive Chairman. The same month the Poochera kaolin-halloysite licence in South Australia was granted. The company's first drilling of its kaolin projects began there in September. By October, 55 holes had found kaolin over 30m thick at what was named the Philips Kaolin Deposit, and Scottish lab tests in November showed about 92% kaolinite, though no halloysite.
2023: Gold, clay and a turn to rare earths
The early part of 2023 brought results across several projects. Halloysite was confirmed at Poochera in March, and surface samples at Smoky in New South Wales returned up to 36.6%. Maiden diamond drilling began at Esker Lake in South Kitikmeot in April, and first assays in June confirmed gold, including 13.02m at 3.14g/t. In July Viridis met its A$1.5m spend and held 51% of South Kitikmeot, with a further A$2m by the end of 2027 needed to reach 66%. First Smoky drill assays also confirmed halloysite, with 4m at 63%. In May it also staked claims in Newfoundland and Labrador for rare earths.
The decisive move came on 1 August 2023, when Viridis agreed to buy the rare earth rights to the Colossus project in Brazil for US$2.0m, US$1m of it upfront, plus performance rights. It raised A$2.2m at $0.25, with Ionic Rare Earths cornerstoning A$600k, and the deal completed in September. More licences were added within weeks.
2023-2024: Colossus drilling and expansion
Drilling at Colossus started on 14 September 2023. Early diamond holes hit thick clay, and in November the first assays confirmed it: 46m at 3,285ppm total rare earth oxides (TREO) in one hole. Further batches found new discoveries. Rafael Moreno was appointed CEO from 15 January 2024.
The company paid for this with placements: A$3.09m at $0.95 in October 2023, about A$4.5m at $1.15 in February 2024, and A$8m at $1.25 in April 2024. Licence deals lifted the landholding to 144.57km2 and then 228.63km2, with a further 9.98km2 agreed in March 2024. Hatch was hired for a Scoping Study, and BNA Mining Solutions to prepare the resource. In April Viridis agreed a 50/50 joint venture with Ionic Rare Earths on separation and recycling technology.
2024: Resource, metallurgy and a lower price
The maiden resource arrived on 4 June 2024: 201Mt at 2,590ppm TREO, covering only about 7% of the project area. In July the Cupim South mining licences and Centro Sul exploration licences were granted and transferred to Viridis. In September ANSTO produced the first mixed rare earth carbonate, a concentrated product, from the Northern Concessions clay, with 76% recovery of magnet rare earths.
Funding became harder. In October 2024 Viridis raised A$4m at $0.52, well below April's $1.25. A second tranche of about A$0.9m needed approval at the 29 November AGM, and the outcome is not in the record. The company said funding would last through the definitive feasibility study if options were exercised. Shares on issue were 71.9m on 18 November 2024. The joint venture with Ionic was formalised in November as Viridion, with scoping studies planned for January 2025.
2024-2025: From exploration to development
On 12 December 2024 ANSTO produced the first carbonate from the Southern Complex, with 78% recovery, completing the metallurgical testing. On 22 January 2025 the resource was upgraded 140% to 493Mt at 2,508ppm TREO, including 329Mt in the higher-confidence measured and indicated categories.
On 28 January 2025 Viridis lodged its environmental impact assessment for a Preliminary License, the first of three approval steps, for the Northern Concessions, and received a municipal land-use certificate. It said the Installation License and construction remained targeted for Q3 2026.
On 29 January 2025 the company said it was shifting from exploration to development, focusing on economic studies, permitting, financing and offtakes, while still planning more drilling at the Southern Complex. Moreno's pay package was changed and director Jose Guedes took on a more hands-on role. At that date the Colossus Scoping Study was still pending, debt was nil, and cash was about A$5.2m including the October raise.
