Tamboran's first-gas target of Q3 2026 has now passed with no confirmation in the filings reviewed
Tamboran Resources said in April it was on track for first gas in the third quarter of 2026, a window that closed on 30 September; the inputs here contain no later update.
Tamboran Resources (NYSE/ASX: TBN) told investors on 3 April 2026 that it was "firmly on track for first gas in the third quarter of 2026", meaning between 1 July and 30 September. That window has now closed. The disclosures reviewed for this article contain no later statement confirming first gas or a new date, so whether it happened, and how much gas is flowing, is unknown from these sources. The April announcement did not say which wells or field the first gas would come from.
The timing matters because Tamboran describes itself as early stage, and its own risk language said no material revenue was expected until 2026. It is a gas explorer in Australia's Beetaloo Basin, in the Northern Territory, and the filing says it has no proved reserves.
What the company holds
The latest estimates are all contingent or prospective volumes, not reserves, and most date from 2023 or early 2024:
- Shenandoah South: 391 bcf contingent and 146 bcf prospective (P50), 47.5% interest
- Velkerri B: 238 bcf (100%), 285 bcf (25%) and 659 bcf (38.75%), across three permit groups
- Velkerri C: 168 bcf (100%), 185 bcf (25%) and 436 bcf (38.75%)
- Tanumbirini: 16.8 bcf prospective, interest not disclosed
The farm-out around the start-up
The same announcement described a farm-in with Formentera Partners' Daly Waters Energy (DWE) over about 10,000 acres of Tamboran's working interest in the Pilot Area and the Beetaloo Central Development Area. The staged earn-in is worth up to about US$28.5 million, made up of an US$11.6 million carry, a further US$11.6 million carry if DWE proceeds to Phase 2, and up to US$5.3 million in milestone carry. That appears to add up to the headline figure.
Completion depends on conditions in DWE's separate deal with INPEX and on Tamboran closing its Falcon acquisition. If it completes, Tamboran's Southern Pilot Area stake would fall from 50% to 44.375%. That differs from the 47.5% Shenandoah South interest listed above, and the inputs do not explain the gap.
Ownership
On 13 August, HITE Hedge Asset Management disclosed a new substantial holding of 8.27% of votes. Several directors received equity awards in June and July.
None of this settles whether first gas has arrived, and the next company update should be checked for that.
