Invictus confirms November spud for Musuma-1 well in Zimbabwe after rig contract revised
Invictus Energy says its Musuma-1 exploration well in the Cabora Bassa Basin is scheduled to start drilling in November 2026, after a revised rig contract and ongoing preparation work.

Invictus Energy plans to begin drilling the Musuma-1 exploration well in Zimbabwe's Cabora Bassa Basin in November 2026, according to its 7 August 2026 announcement. The company says it has signed a Deed of Variation with Exalo Drilling S.A. for Exalo Rig 202, which will drill the well.
What happens next
The company lists these steps before drilling starts:
- Award of the remaining well services contracts, which management said it was targeting "in coming weeks".
- Equipment preparation and staged mobilisation by service providers once contracts are awarded.
- A maintenance and operational readiness campaign on the rig by Exalo.
- Wellpad and civil works, due to start after customary ceremonies with traditional leaders and local communities, plus road upgrades.
- Moving the rig from Mukuyu to the Musuma-1 site, rig-up, then drilling.
Why it matters
Musuma-1 targets a gross mean unrisked prospective resource of 1.2 Tcf of gas and 73 million barrels of condensate. The company calls it the first high-impact exploration well outside the Mukuyu gas-condensate discovery area, testing a new play type. If it succeeds, it could add to the resource base in the eastern part of the licence area, where the company says other prospects have been identified from the CB23 seismic survey.
That is a large number against the company's other listed estimates, such as the Msasa Prospect at 642 bcf of gas and 24 mmbbl of condensate (80% interest, stated 2019). Those figures are not directly comparable, since they differ in date and category.
What is uncertain
The volumes are prospective resources, which carry both a risk of discovery and a risk of development. The company says further exploration and appraisal are needed to confirm any recoverable hydrocarbons.
The timing has also moved. The announcement describes a revised rig contract and schedule, and several steps are still pending. Contract awards for the remaining well services had not been completed at the time of the statement. Any slippage in those steps could affect the November date.
Many of the company's other listed estimates are old, dating from 2014 to 2023, and its interest is not disclosed for several of them.
