Comstock Resources Plans 19 More Haynesville and Bossier Wells in the Western Haynesville This Year
The gas producer said in February it intends to drill 19 additional shale wells in the Western Haynesville during 2026, with no firmer timing given.
Comstock Resources (NYSE: CRK) says it currently intends to drill an additional 19 Haynesville and Bossier shale wells in its Western Haynesville play during 2026. The company made the statement on 2026-02-19 in its annual report. The only timing given is the calendar year, so the wells could fall anywhere between 2026-01-01 and 2026-12-31. With the year now in its final quarter, some of this drilling may already be done, but the inputs do not say.
Why it matters
Comstock is mainly a natural gas company. Its reported company-wide gas reserve estimate (P50) is 7,004.12 bcf, or about 7.0 trillion cubic feet. Its oil reserve estimate is 0.198 million barrels, which is tiny by comparison. The company reports a 100% interest in these totals.
Drilling is how a gas producer turns reserves into output. If the 19 wells are completed and produce as hoped, they would add to the production that supports Comstock's revenue. The disclosure does not say how much gas these wells are expected to produce, what they will cost, or what share of the reserves they relate to.
What is uncertain
- The plan is an intention ("we currently intend"), not a commitment, and the company says it has no obligation to update forward-looking statements.
- The timing is a full year, with no schedule for individual wells.
- The 100% interest applies to the company total as reported. The inputs do not show Comstock's working interest in each of the new wells.
- No earlier timing for this program appears in the inputs, so we cannot say whether the plan has slipped.
Recent results
For the quarter ended 2026-06-30, Comstock reported revenue of $353.3 million and net income of $8.8 million. In June, six executives, including Chairman and CEO M Jay Allison, had shares withheld to cover taxes on vesting stock. Those are tax withholdings on vesting awards, not open-market trades.
The next filing that updates the drilling count or the reserve estimates would show how far the 2026 plan has progressed.
