Comstock plans 19 more Haynesville and Bossier wells in Western Haynesville play during 2026
The gas producer says it intends to drill the additional wells this year, adding to a reserve base of about 7 trillion cubic feet of gas.
Comstock Resources (NYSE: CRK) says it intends to drill an additional 19 Haynesville and Bossier shale wells in its Western Haynesville play during 2026. The company gave the plan in its annual report filed on 19 February 2026: "In 2026, we currently intend to drill an additional 19 Haynesville and Bossier shale wells in this play."
The company has given only a full-year window, from 1 January to 31 December 2026. It has not stated when individual wells will start or finish, or how much the program will cost. The word "currently" signals that the plan could change.
What Comstock holds
Comstock is a natural gas producer. Its latest reported reserve estimates, as of the same filing, are:
- Gas: 7,004.12 billion cubic feet (bcf) at the P50 level, meaning a median estimate
- Oil: 0.198 million barrels at the P50 level
- Company interest: 100%, as reported
The oil figure is tiny next to the gas figure, so the company's value rests almost entirely on gas. New wells in a gas play are the way Comstock turns undeveloped acreage into producing reserves. If the 19 wells perform as planned, they would add to production and could support the reserve base. The company has not said what output it expects from them.
Recent results and insider activity
For the quarter ended 30 June 2026, Comstock reported revenue of $353.3 million and net income of $8.8 million. The company has not tied those results to the Western Haynesville program in the material reviewed here.
On 8 June 2026, six executives had shares withheld to cover taxes on vesting stock. They included Chairman and CEO M. Jay Allison (35,879 shares) and President and CFO Roland O. Burns (24,405 shares). Share withholding for taxes is a routine part of stock vesting and is not an open-market trade.
What is uncertain
- The drilling plan is an intention, not a commitment, and is dated February 2026.
- With the year now in its final two months, the company has not said in the material reviewed how many of the 19 wells are complete. It has also not said whether the plan has changed.
- The company has not stated well costs, expected production rates or the timing of the wells.
- Reserve figures are estimates and can change as wells are drilled and as prices and costs move.
Comstock's later filings and its next annual report should show how much of the 19-well plan was carried out.
