History
WA1 went from a $4.5 million 2022 listing to a niobium discovery at Luni, a 220 Mt resource, about A$124M in cash and a pre-feasibility study due.
2022: Listing and a first discovery
WA1 Resources was admitted to the ASX on 4 February 2022, with trading starting on 8 February. Its IPO raised $4.5 million by issuing 22.5 million shares at $0.20. Weeks later it applied for two more West Arunta licences, which would lift its holding there from 267km² to over 1,500km². They were applications only, and abutted Rio Tinto Exploration's tenements. In June it signed a heritage and exploration agreement with the Kimberley Land Council for its 220km² Hidden Valley nickel-copper project, settling the access question there.
Maiden drilling began in July 2022 with cash of about $3.6 million, helped by a $150,000 government grant. The program of seven holes totalled 1,745m, and the early visual results were inconclusive. Assays in October changed that: P2 held a niobium-rare earth carbonatite (an unusual igneous rock), with 54m at 0.62% Nb2O5 (niobium oxide). In November a second one was confirmed at Luni, 30km away, with a best composite of 4m at 2.88%. WA1 raised $10 million at $2.00 a share, lifting shares on issue to 49.8 million.
2023-2024: Luni takes shape
Single-metre assays in February 2023 confirmed high-grade shallow niobium at Luni, including 7m at 3.5% within 19m at 2.0%. Luni became the focus. Tom Lyons moved from non-executive director to Executive Director from 1 March 2023 to lead exploration. Step-out drilling extended the mineralisation, and by June a hole returned 10m at 8.3% within 42m at 2.7%. By August the shallow high-grade blanket was about 1.5km long.
The work was paid for with a series of raisings at rising prices: $10m from Regal Funds Management at $2.75 in May 2023 (about 53.4 million shares), $15m at $5.00 in September (about 56.7 million), $40m at $10.00 in January 2024 (about 61.3 million) and $60m at $17 in July 2024 (about 64.9 million). The maiden resource slipped from late 2023 to the first half of 2024 amid assay delays. In October 2023 WA1 also signed a Negotiation Protocol with the Ngururrpa native title holders, a process agreement toward a mining agreement rather than the agreement itself.
In June 2024 first flotation testwork gave a 58% Nb2O5 concentrate at 53% recovery. On 1 July 2024 the maiden resource arrived: an Inferred 200 Mt at 1.0% Nb2O5, including a high-grade 53 Mt at 2.1%, covering weathered material only. Refining tests in October produced 66.9% Nb2O5 at 99.9% recovery.
2025: Proving the product and upgrading the resource
In February 2025 WA1 made its first ferroniobium, an iron-niobium alloy, in a 0.5kg test, completing proof-of-concept across all three flowsheet stages, though only at small scale. East Luni assays showed an exceptionally high-grade zone, including 28.5m at 6.6%. On 1 July 2025 Kathleen Bozanic, CFO of IGO, became Chair as Gary Lethridge retired after serving since 2021.
The June 2025 resource update lifted Luni to 220 Mt at 1.0%, with a first Indicated (better-defined) portion of 73 Mt at 1.38%. In August the company made its first niobium oxide in a bench test, at 96.8% and 91% recovery, and raised A$100M at A$17 a share, issuing about 5.9 million shares to reach about 74.2 million. Cash was A$72.8M at 30 June before the raising. In November the best Luni hole yet returned 67.3m at 5.4%, including 30.0m at 9.8%, and the Australian Government granted Luni Major Project Status for three years, a facilitation step rather than an approval.
2026: Towards a pre-feasibility study
On 14 May 2026 the resource was updated again. The total stayed at 220 Mt at 1.0%, but the Indicated portion rose to 93 Mt at 1.32%, now 57% of contained niobium, with an Ore Reserve as the next target. Scaled-up flotation tests in June on four composites of about 800kg averaged 44% at 54% recovery, while Composite A, the focus for early mining years, gave 46% at 67%. The pre-feasibility study was expected in the fourth quarter of calendar 2026.
As of 19 October 2026, WA1 held 100% of Luni, with about 93,000m drilled and 41 holes awaiting assays. The airstrip was completed in July. Cash was about A$124M at 30 June 2026, with no debt mentioned, and about 74.3 million shares were on issue. The pre-feasibility study, the next resource update targeting a first Measured resource in the first quarter of 2027, and the AGM on 18 November 2026 were all still to come.
